All decades

This map plots the venues named in The London Stage, 1660–1800 against the streets of modern London. Each mark stands for one house, a royal patent theatre, a booth erected at Bartholomew Fair, a tavern room, or a garden stage, sized to the number of performances recorded there. Filled marks denote a surviving footprint or street address; lighter, dashed marks a district known only in approximate terms. Hover or tap a mark to read the venue, its span of activity, and the abbreviation used in the printed calendars. Two historical maps, John Strype's updated 1720 edition of Stow and John Rocque's 1746 map of London, the most detailed contemporary surveys, are available as overlays. Details on wards, parishes, and places in Rocque's map are also available for orientation.
